KLA Stream Keepers

A Water Quality Citizen Science Project

Learning, testing, and caring for our watershed

KLA Stream Keepers is a community-based water quality project created through Kindred Learning Adventures.

Through this project, our learners will step into real citizen science work by observing, testing, and caring for a local stream in the Neabsco Creek watershed.

This is hands-on environmental learning rooted in place, purpose, and community.

Our learners will not just read about ecosystems, water quality, and environmental stewardship. They will experience it in real time, alongside water quality professionals, community partners, citizen scientists, and one another.

About the Project

KLA has adopted a stream at Cloverdale Park in Dale City, Virginia, located within the Neabsco Creek watershed.

This stream will serve as our outdoor learning site for ongoing observation, water quality testing, environmental inquiry, and stewardship.

Over time, learners will have the opportunity to return to the same location, gather data, ask deeper questions, and better understand how local choices impact the health of our waterways.

KLA Stream Keepers is designed to be child-centered, community-led, and rooted in real-world learning.

What Learners Will Do

Through this project, learners may participate in:

  • Water quality testing and observation

  • Hands-on science stations with environmental professionals

  • Stream and habitat exploration

  • Data collection and comparison over time

  • Watershed education

  • Environmental stewardship activities

  • Nature journaling and field notes

  • Conversations about conservation, restoration, and community care

Learners will have the opportunity to see science as something alive, useful, and connected to the world around them.

Why It Matters

Water quality impacts our communities, our ecosystems, and our future.

By participating in KLA Stream Keepers, learners will begin to understand that they are not just visitors in nature.

They are caretakers.

They are observers.

They are problem-solvers.

They are learning. In real time.

This project helps children connect science to civic responsibility, environmental care, and community action.

The KLA Way

KLA Stream Keepers reflects our commitment to community schooling, in-the-moment learning, and meaningful partnerships.

This project brings together children, families, educators, environmental professionals, and local organizations around one shared goal: learning from and caring for the world right outside our door.
